The Etsy thumbnail problem

When a shopper searches on Etsy, they see a grid of small thumbnails. Your first image — the thumbnail — is the only thing between you and a click. It needs to stop the scroll in a crowded grid of similar products.

The highest-performing Etsy thumbnails share these traits:

  • Clean, uncluttered — the product is immediately recognisable
  • Well-lit — no dark, shadowy, or blown-out areas
  • Styled, not just shot — a small amount of context or styling makes a significant difference
  • Square (1:1) — Etsy's grid is square; non-square images get cropped

Study your top competitors' thumbnails and identify what makes the best-performing ones different. Then improve on them.

How many photos to use

Etsy allows 10 photos per listing. Use all 10. Listings with more images consistently rank better in Etsy search and convert at higher rates.

Buyers scrolling on Etsy are often comparing 5–10 similar products at once. More images = more purchase confidence = more sales.

Essential shot types for Etsy

1. Hero thumbnail — Clean, styled, sharply lit. This should be your best single image of the product.

2. Multiple angles — Show front, back, sides, and any detail that matters (clasp on jewellery, spine on a book, base of a candle).

3. Scale reference — A hand holding the item, or the item next to a common object. Etsy buyers return items because "it was smaller than I expected" — remove this doubt.

4. Lifestyle / in-context — Product in a real or styled environment. A candle on a bathroom shelf. A mug on a morning coffee table. These sell the lifestyle, not just the product.

5. Process or materials — Show raw materials, work in progress, or your hands making the item. This uniquely communicates the handmade nature of your product — something mass-market competitors cannot replicate.

6. Packaging — If you use beautiful packaging, show it. Many Etsy buyers are buying gifts; knowing it will arrive beautifully packaged is a purchase trigger.

7. Variation images — If your listing has colour or size variants, show all of them clearly.

Etsy-specific photography tips

  • Warm, soft light outperforms harsh bright light on Etsy — it suits the handmade, artisanal aesthetic buyers expect
  • Consistent backgrounds across your shop makes your storefront look curated and professional (use the same surface or backdrop for all products)
  • Natural light from a window is often ideal for Etsy products — it has a quality that suits handmade goods
  • Add props thoughtfully — one or two complementary props (dried flowers, fabric swatch, small foliage) adds context without distracting
  • Shoot horizontally (landscape) for any images that might be featured in Etsy's editorial or newsletter placements
